【IMPORTANT】Schedule for the start of pre-entry tuberculosis screening (for nationals of Philippines, Nepal, and Vietnam)

The number of people entering Japan from abroad has increased, resulting in a significant increase in the number of foreign-born tuberculosis patients. Therefore, the Japanese government plans to start “Pre-Entry Tuberculosis Screening” during fiscal year 2025.

●Target Audience
Those who are subject to this screening are those who are nationals of the target countries (Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Nepal, Myanmar, and China) (※1) and who are planning to enter and reside in Japan as mid- to long-term residents (excluding those with re-entry permission (including deemed re-entry permission)), as well as those who are designated as digital nomads and their spouses or children under the Designated Activities Notification No. 53 and 54.
However, if your current place of residence is confirmed as being in a country or region other than the eligible countries/regions by proof of a residence permit or other document, you will not be eligible.

*1 The implementation dates for Indonesia, Myanmar, and China have not yet been decided.
*2 JET program participants, JICA training participants (long-term and short-term), JICA Human Resource Development Scholarship (JDS) students, government-sponsored students recommended by embassies, contracted programs for the education and training of foreign students, nurses and care workers, foreign nationals with specific skills, and foreign domestic support personnel acceptance programs based on EPAs with the relevant countries (Special Zone Act, Article 16-4).

March 24, 2025: Registration for health checkups begins at designated medical institutions (Philippines and Nepal)
May 26, 2025 : Registration for health checkups begins at designated medical institutions (Vietnam)
June 23, 2025 : Mandatory submission of a Tuberculosis Screening Clearance Certificate (Philippines, Nepal) (※)
September 1, 2025: Mandatory submission of a Tuberculosis Screening Clearance Certificate (Vietnam) (※)

*Those who apply after the mandatory submission date will be required to submit a “JAPAN Pre-Entry Tuberculosis (TB) Screening Clearance Certificate.”

Border measures to prevent the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19)

New entry of foreign nationals
Visa exemption arrangements have been resumed from 0:00 am (JST) on October 11, 2022.
Suspension of visa validity under the border measures has been also lifted from 0:00 am (JST) on October 11, 2022.

Quarantine measures
From 0:00 am (JST) on April 29, 2023, about all travelers and returnees(NEW)
(1) All travelers and returnees will no longer be required to submit either a certificate of negative result of COVID-19 test conducted within 72 hours prior to departure, or a valid COVID-19 vaccination certificate of three doses or equivalent.
(2) Currently implemented measures including random sampling test which are provisional measures for all travelers and returnees arriving from China (excluding Hong Kong and Macau) by direct flights, will be replaced to the testing on arrival required to those who show symptoms, which is the same measure applied to all other travelers and returnees.
